Zang Toi Fall 2012: The Subtlety of Elegance

NEW YORK, Feb 13, 2012/ FW/ — “It’s another standing ovation,” commented two socialites who were sitting front row at the Zang Toi Fall 2012 show this afternoon at the Lincoln Center.

Indeed it was! Having followed Zang Toi’s career since 2000, the New York-based designer continuously received kudos from the fashion flock season after season. And, it is not just at the fashion show, mind you. When Zang Toi brings his collections to his famous trunk shows, he always wows the ladies, mind you.

So, what is Zang Toi’s magic? His Fall 2012 collection easily answers that – the subtle elegance of fine workmanship and attention to details.

To Zang Toi, clothes are about the woman, not the other way around. Hence, when a woman wears a Zang Toi creation, she is the center of attention; her grace and beauty enhanced by the masterfully tailored garment and beautifully designed clothes that fit her like a second skin.

Always exuberant in his designs, Zang Toi has found the perfect pitch between silhouette and embellishments. A born colorist, he has even found the balance between using black, gray, white and the brilliant color red.

This season, while black, gray and white dominated, red was the highlight as the Malaysian-born designer sent different shades of red. In fact, the original graphic print of reds that graced the runway summed up all the colors in the collection.

Also, a happy note this season – everything shown on the runway was designed by Zang Toi. From the clothes to the shoes, the jewelry and the make-up, all of them bear the Zang Toi brand.

The cosmetics line had been out in Asia for the past two years and it is expected to hit U.S. stores in September 2012!

NEW YORK: Malaysia's Zang Toi and Lebanon's Reem Acra won strong applause for their red-carpet looks at New York fashion week Monday while Carlos Miele drew inspiration from the pampas of his native Brazil.

With Grammy-winner Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" as his soundtrack, Toi kicked off his fall-winter collection with white mini coats and black trouser suits, before making an abrupt shift to bright red silk.

His fans -- more mature, ethnically diverse and outgoing than the usual jaded New York fashion crowd -- lapped it up, breaking into applause for elegant gowns in fetching scarlet hues and then honouring him with a standing ovation.

Backstage, the 50-year-old designer with an unbridled sense of fun said he wanted to see women make a real effort to look really beautiful for themselves, their husbands, their boyfriends, their lovers.

"I wanted the clothes to be very, very glamourous," he added. "It's about glamour and gorgeous clothes for gorgeous girls."

Front-row guests included Saudi entrepreneur and film producer Mohammed Al Turki, US reality TV star Alex McCord and towering Czech model Petra Nemcova, with whom the diminutive Toi hammed it up for the cameras.

Acra, who in January dressed Madonna in an pewter gown for the Golden Globes awards, similarly poured on the glamour with a finely-balanced collection of crisp daytime suits, glittering cocktail mini-dresses and fluid chiffon gowns.

Her looks ranged effortlessly from a leather sheath dress in hunter green and a cable-knit sweater over a leather pencil skirt to a metallic tweed skirt and jacket combination and a embroidered one-shoulder gown in silk crepe and tulle.

Hot on the heels of Nicholas K's urban cowboys on day one of fashion week, Miele put a cosmopolitan spin on the traditional outfits of the gauchas of the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil.

While the silhouettes were most definitely urban, there was no mistaking the rustic rural origins of Miele's colorful ponchos with gold tassels, which he matched with authentic broad-rim hats and sashes.

Backstage, Miele, who is based in Sao Paulo and sells in 38 countries, said he felt that after frequent visits to a friend's farm in southern Brazil, it was time to introduce that region's unique style to an international audience.

"They are natural girls," he said, referring to the gauchas of the wide-open pampas. "There is freedom... I thought this was time to bring this part of the culture of Brazil, of the pampas and the gauchas, to the catwalk."

In other shows Monday, Olivier Theyskens took over the Park Avenue Armory to send out the latest city-savvy basics from his growing Theyskens' Theory collection, including a dark boxy overcoat and supple leather jumpsuit.

"I was looking to complete the wardrobe on which I've been working for the past year and a half," the Brussels-born designer, formerly at Rochas and now happily settled in New York, told AFP backstage.
 
Several looks featured short shorts. Odd perhaps in a fall-winter collection, but Theyskens, 35, said they fit right into his vision of a contemporary tomboy. "It's something cute that goes with the overall look."

Earlier, with Hollywood star Renee Zellweger in the front row, Carolina Herrera delivered a classical feminine collection that ran the gamut of colors from indigo to purple to pink, with wool and silk her favored fabrics.

Many of the 40 looks -- seen on as many top models with severely backcombed hairstyles -- were paired with black wedge shoes designed for Herrera by Manolo Blahnik.

I have been a Zang Toi fan and loyal customer for a long time, so this time I made it a point to come prepared to meet the maestro. My preparation...Kz my photographer! After enjoying the front row seat at the Malaysia International Fashion Week at Zebra Square we braved the traffic to meet him. Rushing into Pavilion with my charming friend, Genevie, the Miss Universe Malaysia Finalist 2012 and Kz in tow, we reached Zang Toi Cafe in Parkson Grand. 

There we saw him, as usual busy at work taking measurements for a dear friend, Yue Yii. It was such a breath-taking sight of the brothers at work, See Loun was looking very tired due to the hectic schedule that day. They were at the KL International Trade Forum where Zang Toi was one of the speakers on the subject, "Make smart decisions and checkmate your competitors"

Zang Toi has proven to be a very successful international designer who has weathered time and bursting with passion and creativity. We had a short meeting and he exudes such excitement, at one point I thought he was going to jump on the table! His passion and excitement was contagious and I soon caught it! I love Zang Toi and am privileged to have caught this special moment and I am sure there will be many more to come as I embark on my new venture.

ZANG TOI: FASHION ROYALTY IN THE WORLD OF HAUTE COUTURE

Zang Toi is a renowned Fashion Designer who was born and raised in a small village, Kuala Krai in Kelantan, Malaysia. He was the youngest of seven children of a local grocer. Zang landed in New York at the age of 20 where he studied at the distinguished Parsons School of Design. In August 1989, he opened his atelier and soon after, U.S Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour featured Zang in March 1990 issue and was one of the first Asian designers championed by the renowned editor.


In 1990, Zang was awarded the Mouton Cadet Young Designer of the Year, which recognises top, young, US designer-of-the-year. In a Newsday article published in 1991, Frank De Caro enthusiastically noted the designer’s success, “If anyone is The Next Big Thing, it’s him.” (Newsday, New York, 29 April 1991). His work has since been featured in major publications such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Time, Newsweek, The New York Times and Financial Times. Not only has he dressed Hollywood celebrities such as Sharon Stone, Elizabeth Taylor, Farrah Fawcett, Kirstie Alley, Patti LaBelle, Gong Li, Eva Longoria, Fergie and Heather Graham, but has also created luxurious wardrobe for philanthropists and royalty including Melinda Gates and Saudi Princess Haifa Bandar Al-Saud.


Zang's continued success was most recently recognised by Vivid Magazine where he was named one of the Top 8 most influential Chinese Americans (June-July 2011 issue). Today, the world continues to recognise his passion for timeless beauty as he builds on a strong tradition of elegance.
